Principal Scientist – Product Safety
With a current annual turnover of £5.0 billion and employing over 20,000 people, DS Smith Plc has set out a strategy to become the leading international supplier of recycled packaging for consumer goods.
This is a newly created role within DS Smith Plc which is currently developing a Group Technical Team to support its European Paper & Packaging businesses.
In line with increasing legislative and regulatory demands on our packaging, we require an expert in food safety who will add value to the business by providing leadership in the area of scientific matters relating to Product Safety and REACH regulations. Reporting to the Group Product Safety Manager, the job holder will devise and implement appropriate chemical, toxological and organoleptic test procedures and protocols, to ensure our products, processes and raw materials comply with legislation. He /she will provide scientific support and advice, taking the lead in researching new procedures and methodologies and acting on new legislation, in relation to food contact packaging, to the European businesses and use this information proactively in order to delight our customers.
The role will involve contact with external laboratories and European Regulatory Authorities e.g. BfR, EFSA, FSA, and provision of internal audit reports, in order to ensure adherence to regulatory standards e.g. BRC (IOP), REACH Regulations.
As the location of the technical team has not been finalised, the role could be based, either in the UK, or Western Europe and significant travel to Group plants will be required.
The objective is ultimately for DS Smith to become a leading authority on packaging safety matters and to be aware of any potential customer issues, even before they are aware themselves. When this position is established we will look to offer our customers distinct benefits in their own product design and marketing activities using the differentiation that this knowledge offers.
Candidates will be Degree qualified in a relevant discipline e.g. Chemistry, Microbiology with significant experience, in a similar role, supporting multiple sites across Europe. This experience is likely to have been gained in a food manufacturing, food packaging and or retail environment.
Fluency in English is essential and the ability to speak other European languages would be advantageous.
