Pensworth is a well-established Dairy Company that operates a Milk Processing Dairy at Southampton and 9 distribution depots throughout the South of England and circa £50m and as a result of an exciting expansion to our existing business serving food service businesses throughout the South East of England, we now have a requirement for a Technical Manager to join our team to lead and support the provision of an excellent technical/quality and hygiene service to our business:

Technical Manager   £38,000 - £42,000 per annum Depending on Experience

Technical manager will hold full autonomy over the delivery of technical / quality / hygiene input, support, and decision making to the factory floor to ensure that standards of product safety, quality and legality are maintained. 


The role will encompass the following responsibilities:


Oversee, at site level product safety, quality, and legality, to ensure staff compliance.

Analyse data from the factory floor to determine if factory personnel are aware of the factory standards implementing/organising training as appropriate.

To implement the technical strategy on a day to day basis, ensuring that all technical standards, customer codes of practice & Food Safety, Quality & Legislation practices are met.

To assure food safety through an effectively managed HACCP system, which reflects best practice and current legislation.

To set, improve & maintain the Technical Quality Management System and look for ways of improving ways of working

To be an active member of the Laboratory Testing Team, to carry out, lead and monitor all testing results and implement and corrective actions where required.

To manage, develop and maintain accreditation for the laboratory. 

To maintain Laboratory Systems meeting the requirements of the business system and external auditors.

To interpret trends and data and advise on corrective action strategy.

Manage daily, weekly, monthly reporting based on appropriate internal & external KPIs.

To maintain quality standards of existing products and assure product safety & quality are included as part of all NPD.

To develop and manage continuous improvement systems.

To facilitate new and innovative processes and systems that improve the way products are made.

To ensure that hygiene practices within areas are adequate to ensure safety standards.

To support production to actively maintain technical standards advising on how to tackle issues that may compromise technical integrity

To maintain a positive working relationship with the customer ensuring that all customer requirements are consistently met in a timely manner, providing information and accurate technical advice

With Due Diligence in mind continually strive to improve personal and team performance and anticipate risks and take appropriate action to avoid potential issues.

Manage hygiene schedules and hygiene teams, chemical supply and KPI's relevant to the hygiene function.

Responsible for allergen controls and management.

Appropriate share of responsibility for all aspects of technical / quality manuals

Responsible for appropriate share of preparation and hosting of visits, audits and launches.

Appropriate level of health and safety responsibility within the remit of this role.

To personally ensure that all aspects of Due Diligence (Food Safety, Quality and Legislation) are adhered to.

To personally take the appropriate and reasonable action in the event of witnessing a breach (or potential breach) of Food Safety, Quality or Legislation.

The Person:

The successful candidate will be a dynamic team-player with excellent communication skills. They will be a strong people-manager to manage and lead the Laboratory Team and work with the Production team to meet the required standards and have the ability to demonstrate the following:

Educated to degree level in microbiology or equivalent experience within a microbiological environment

Possess at least a Level 3 HACCP qualification
Experience of procedures involved in bringing a product to launch
Experience of BRC Global Food Standards criteria

Analytical approach to Problem Solving / Investigations

Experience of Laboratory Management Systems
Experience of customer Codes of Practice
Experience of working in a fast paced, chilled food manufacturing/processing business
Good communicator at all levels of the business
Team player.
Self-motivator with the ability to work on their own initiative.
Specification writing experience
Good organisational skills.
Computer skills.
