SENIOR R&D MANAGER – NATIONAL CHAIN ACCOUNT (FOOD SERVICE) & MIDDLE EAST

Objectives:

The Main role is to manage the activities of the R&D team for this department to ensure work is completed in a satisfactory and timely manner. To meet and exceed customer expectations and drive excellence in this department. To develop the team members and work closely with the account management to ensure business targets are met.

To work with the R&D Director and management team to develop and deploy new strategies in line with business plans that ensure NWF R&D continues to lead in the markets that we operate in.

Projects will be allocated in line with the pipeline customers and priorities. Thus the scope of the work will be varied and challenging and not limited to a few accounts.

In addition to managing the department, there will be specific personal responsibility for large key accounts and mentoring/coaching responsibilities for more junior personnel. 

Travel to the Middle East territories will be required on an ad-hoc basis when required by the business. Other European travel will be required.

To ensure the successful development of ingredient formulations and recipes. Also, to develop and refine prototypes in line with customer requirements.  Working in partnership with the customer and NWF sales teams within budgets and deadlines to successfully secure new business and retain and develop existing business.

Qualifications and Experience

This position requires a minimum of a BSc degree in food science or related discipline with 5+ years industry experience pertinent to product development and people management.

Main Activities and Responsibilities:

To be a key member of the R&D team.

To have a depth/range of knowledge and expertise that enables the individual to:

  • Manage priorities across multiple projects
  • Manage team activities, balancing resource needs against business requirements.
  • Be aware of sales price and volume activity in all of own accounts and work to positively support growth
  • Handle all key activities related the running of the department.
  • Be independent in the  R & D management and communication needs of the account
  • Proactively negotiate on all aspects of the account when required.
  • To define , prepare and present customer/commercial information including costs as and when required
  • To ensure information is shared with all relevant cross functional groups to aid knowledge and account growth
  • To develop ingredient formulas and recipes appropriate to supplying added value products, involving the consideration of
  • Selection and application of ingredients
  • Cost, availability, functionality and legislative status
  • Customer acceptability 
  • Purchasing policy regarding chosen suppliers
  • In liaison with the Account Managers support the customer base by ensuring that preparation is made to participate in customer presentations, and have sound working knowledge of the customers markets and products.
  • Develop a positive working relationship with the customer, both external and internal. 
  • Source ingredients, formulate, apply and test at bench level and then evaluate outgoing product to ensure accurate preparations where required.
  • Conduct product demonstrations as required.
  • Modify formulations, recipes and manufacturing conditions to plant abilities, and customer requirements. 
  • Liaising with Marketing / Chefs / Commercial on new product development and customer presentations and proactive work.  
  • Customer support for chain accounts covering lab application and factory trial support when required.
  • Liaising with purchasing and supply chain to ensure account projects also fulfil customer’s commercial expectations and to use Newlyweds resources to maximise profits and increase our profile/presence in the food ingredients arena.
  • To travel within UK, Europe, Middle East, Asia Pacific and USA to facilitate any of the above project related activities. 
  • To support in tastings and assist the Foods service team to create gold standard flavours in all submissions.
  • To support Department Managers where necessary.
  • Undertake other activities or responsibilities as the business requires.

Manufacturing Knowledge and Application

  • Have a background and knowledge of the savoury food ingredients industry, ideally specialising in coating systems and seasoning and functional ingredient systems.
  • Understand the product application and supply chain requirements of the National Chain, Food Service and Middle East customer and processing base.
  • Be competent in the use and application of relevant process equipment, both NWF and customer.
  • Understand NWF manufacturing processes
  • Have a working knowledge and understanding of the customers production processes and limitations
  • Conduct trials in pilot plant and provide technical service/support at customer sites
  • Conduct analytical testing on competitive materials.
  • Use all equipment with due care and attention

Administration

  • Undertake all relevant administration, ensuring records are up to date and accurate
  • Ensure all associated administrative tasks within CQL, Purchasing and Customer Service are followed up and accurate, before utilised on behalf of the customers 
  • Upkeep of the lab and office, maintaining an organised workplace.
  • Perform literary research, ensuring NWF resources and team members are kept fully up to date. 

Personal Development

  • Undertake continuous professional development via appropriate reading material, seminars and involvement in development projects as discussed and agreed with line manager.
  • To work within a Team, meeting regularly with the other team members and collectively accepting the responsibility for the day to day operation of the department.
  • To provide training where applicable to NWF Personnel.
  • To undertake such training as is viewed necessary by the company to improve personal performance or to meet the overall business objectives.
  • The above duties and responsibilities are not exhaustive.  You will be required, directed by your line manager to accept changes in responsibility or duties within the department or other areas of the plant, subject to suitable knowledge or training.
