We have a great role for a Head of Engineering / Chief Engineer to be based in the North East. Working as part of the site SMT to ensure engineering solutions support and enhance the delivery of the business plans.

Main Responsibilities

As Head of Engineering, you'll have accountability for leading and developing the engineering plan and activities for the site enabling operational teams to meet their targets.

Key to your success will be setting and driving a performance dashboard to monitor and improve labour utilisation and asset availability and reliability amongst other critical measures. You will implement and maintain an effective and detailed PPM system which, when coupled with a consumable traceability system, will enable the team to calculate cost of asset ownership and identify areas of ongoing engineering focus and areas for investment.

Working closely with the Operations, Technical and SHE functions the Head of Engineering will develop and implement good manufacturing processes that comply with all Food Safety and Health & Safety requirements and that meet the needs of BRC and other customer specific standards.

You will set the direction and lead your team playing a key role in promoting a culture of continuous improvement in the function and across the site. Through role modelling, sharing best practice and developing the team you will enable the engineering function to deliver their potential, supporting your team to ensure they are focused, engaged and striving to the highest of standards at all times.

You’ll proactively contribute to product development applying the best available technology and automation to create efficient and sustainable manufacturing processes, whilst also promoting the sustainability agenda to reduce environmental impact.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced and ambitious Senior Engineering Manager to make a significant difference to the profitability and culture on site. You will lead a team of approximately 20 people covering engineering, facilities maintenance and administrative functions. It is key that you have an open and engaging management style which sets clear direction and standards and supports the team to meet such.

Biggest challenges
They key challenge for the role and the site is to increase the number and quality of the PPM checks in the schedule making the checks meaningful and asset specific. Spares management and the implementation of a CAMM system will be instrumental in driving your success. The fast paced nature of the industry means you will need to be comfortable flexing between an operational and strategic approach, tailoring your methods as necessary to deliver results.

The Ideal Candidate
You'll already have a proven record of leading an Engineering department and your strong leadership skills will enable you to make an immediate impact, as well as providing a longer term contribution to the continuing development and success of the business. You'll need a passion for customer service as you'll be dealing with different internal and external customers both at site and across the Group more widely.

• Relevant Engineering qualifications required at either HND or degree level.

• Previous experience of working within manufacturing is essential and a background within food manufacturing would be preferred.

• Strong project management skills with experience of creating a lean enterprise culture are a requirement and as such you will be a yellow belt or higher in Lean Six Sigma.

• You'll also need to have past experience of making an impact on the bottom line when it comes to the Engineering department.
