Graduate – Technical Scheme

Got a taste for food manufacturing? Looking for variety and real responsibility?

Join our technical graduate scheme which offers three very different placements within the technical function.

We may have been around for 167 years, but we’re not hanging around in the past!

We are a sixth generation family business, with a portfolio of five food companies: Abel & Cole, our bakery Jacksons, Wellocks, MyFresh and The Food Doctor. Great people and great food are at the heart of what we do, and we’re exceptionally proud of our heritage and values. Yet we understand that the development of talented people is critical for our continued success in an ever-changing industry. Our graduates are a valued part of our Group, and for two years now we’ve been welcoming them into a variety of functions across our different businesses.

Hands-on food manufacturing experience is at the heart of our technical graduate scheme

Our challenging two-year scheme is a busy mix of work placements, project assignments and development training. You’ll be following a structured programme, working in three of our businesses across our group, which will give you all kinds of experience, including factory trials, NPD and auditing.

We take your learning and development seriously

Over the course of the scheme, you will gain an in-depth understanding of the following: allergen management, customer and consumer complaints, HACCP, internal and external auditing including BRC, supplier approval, ingredient controls, quality systems and quality assurance… and that’s just for starters! We’ll also set you up with a two-year training plan, which includes a variety of externally accredited courses, as well as personal development training designed to build management skills.

We’d love for you to apply

If you are a recent graduate (2016 onwards), or are in your final year of study, ideally from a discipline relating to food science or nutrition. Industry experience is desirable, but it’s more important that you can demonstrate a real passion for the food industry, and follow the latest food manufacturing news.

We’re looking for technical managers in the making

Strong organisational and communication skills are a must. You’ll also need good analytical and problem solving skills, as you’ll be identifying areas for improvement and proposing solutions. The role requires flexibility, as your placements will be in three of our different businesses, which are located across the country.

So what’s in it for me?

-Roles with responsibility, and opportunities for ownership in the work you do.

-Exposure to our senior leadership teams, both through project work, and in your day to day role.

-Full financial support to gain professional qualifications, including HACCP, auditing and labelling as well as the Chartered Management Institute principles of management and leadership.

-Regular mentoring meetings with a senior manager from one of our businesses.

-A support network of current graduates. Between them they have a variety of experiences in businesses and roles (and they’re a sociable bunch, too!).

Think you’ve got what it takes? We would love to hear from you:

Follow the link below, and you’ll be asked to submit your CV and answer a few questions so that we can get to know you a little better. The deadline is 11th February 2019, though don’t delay as we may close applications before then! We will be interviewing in February with the final selection event taking place in mid-March.

Company

One of the guiding principles from our shareholders is that the company should not have “all its eggs in one basket” so we currently have a portfolio of five food businesses in different but complementary market areas:

Aunt Bessie’s is one of the fastest growing frozen food brands in the UK. As well as its famous Yorkshire puddings, the range also includes a growing selection of family favourites, from tasty, traditional stuffing, to seasonal vegetables and nostalgic desserts.

Jackson’s Bakery, the leading UK sandwich bread producer, baking more than one million loaves each week, and home of Yorkshire’s Champion Bread, bloomers, baked to perfection in Hull using flour milled in Yorkshire from wheat grown in Yorkshire.

Hazeldene Foods, specialists in freshly prepared salad leaves and salad vegetables.

Parripak Foods, market leaders in the preparation of fresh vegetables.

Abel & Cole was established 25 years ago and since then has built on its reputation for supplying high quality organic vegetable boxes. It delivers a range of groceries, all locally sourced wherever possible, to 50,000 homes across the country every week.
