The Company

Our client is a privately owned food business which imports and distributes speciality fine foods, both chilled and ambient, to a range of manufacturing, retail and food serve customers. As a leader in their field, they are experiencing continual growth and are now seeking a Buyer who can support their Meat, Fish and Dairy markets.

The Role

Reporting to the Buyer Manager, you will be responsible for managing a supply base in particular for their fast moving categories, ensuring the required quality, price, and service standards are met or exceeded at all times. You will be required to ensure that all buying activities are carried out in line with company strategy, policies and procedures, ensuring continuity of supply, as well as negotiating contract terms regarding pricing, rebates, promotional support and exclusivity with the designated suppliers to achieve optimal commercial benefit on both sides. The role will develop so that you will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the market and will be the ‘expert’ in their field, as well as providing relevant and timely product information for internal customers and colleagues.

The Person

This role would suit a bright and motivated graduate who has a Food or Business related degree, with previous experience in a similar role at either a buying or junior buyer level – ideally you’ll have worked with short shelf life products. Fluency in a second language (Chinese/Italian/French/Spanish) would be an advantage, though not essential, as the role will require dealing with an international supply base. Having worked already in the food industry, there will be an expectation that you have a basic appreciation of Food Safety, Food Quality and Customer Audit Compliance. You will need to have excellent communication and time management skills with the ability for understanding and negotiating contracts with ease. In addition, you will be able to confidently employ your strong commercial awareness for the sourcing of new suppliers and products, and will have some experience of applying category management techniques.
