Interim Control/ Automation Engineer 
1 Year Contract 
£Day Rate + Expenses

To provide innovative solutions to Process, Re-Engineering and Continuous Improvement projects or issues with specific reference to Control, Instrumentation & Electrical projects. To provide Project Management support to Operations.  To manage and control major and sundry Capital Projects including investigation, solution, design, development, estimation, implementation, installation and commissioning throughout  in line with customer requirements and overall business goals.

Scope:

  1. Reporting to: Senior Control Engineer
  2. Positions Reporting to The Job Holder:

During projects managed by the Control Engineer multi-discipline teams will report to him - these being CBL and Contractors/Consultants numbering in excess of 10 persons.

  1. Key Dimensions

    -To assist in defining and implementing Instrumentation and Control Engineering Standards across  and auditing these Standards to ensure compliance.

    -Fequently required to travel to all other CBL locations.  This may be at short notice and can be for extended periods.

    -To manage multi-disciplined teams to execute CAPEX projects across all  functions assuming responsibility for all aspects from securing of funds through to commissioning and handover.
    -To specify, design, purchase and supervise the installation of instrumentation and control systems including: computer networks, programmable logic controllers (PLC), electrical, electronic, pneumatic and electro-mechanical equipment, ensuring legislative compliance and in-line with all relevant Instrumentation and Engineering Standards.

    -To give technical assistance to production and engineering departments in all areas of computing, instrumentation control, electrical and electronic systems.

    -To assist in development and implementation of standards and systems to promote continuous improvement in the CAPEX execution process and ensure legislative compliance in all areas of expertise.

Key Responsibilities:

- Major CAPEX projects, across all functions, involving electrical and control systems are estimated, specified, designed, constructed and installed, taking responsibility for budget, timescale, scope and HS&E requirements.
 

-Software is developed for all control system applications, including PLC’s, HMI’s and computer systems to ensure maximum productivity from plant affected.
 

-Project manage multi-disciplined CAPEX projects across all functions. Take responsibility for budget, timescale, scope and HS&E compliance to ensure projects are executed to meet business needs.
 

-Support existing electrical, instrumentation and control systems and ensure requests for change/assistance are satisfied in accordance with existing standards to ensure production is maximised and all modifications are recorded/approved. The control engineer has a responsibility to recommend improvements or replacements which will improve reliability, safety or production.
 

-Provide technical assistance and training to engineering departments across all functions with respect to electrical, instrumentation and control systems. This will enable local engineering resource to provide day to day support for such systems.
 

-New systems/methods of working are pro-actively sought/developed to improve the project execution process and are implemented across all project functions.
 

-Liaison with Business IT Management to ensure continuity and compatibility with Process IT.
 

-Electronic circuits are designed and produced for specified use where commercial products are not available, the requirements are defined by engineering management or self motivated to improve reliability of equipment or production.

Key Skills & Experience Required:

Essential

-Education to degree level in electrical and electronic engineering (or equivalent) is essential to the role. This should be backed up with at least four years’ relevant industrial experience.
 

-Practical experience and knowledge of legislation governing engineering installations in hazardous areas.
 

-Qualified in SIL assessment techniques.
 

-Practical experience and knowledge of HS&E legislation in the workplace.
 

-Project engineering and management.
 

-Use of project engineering tools and techniques.
 

-Training, use and development of proprietary instrumentation and control equipment, control software and graphics systems.
 

-Safety training associated with engineering installation including hazardous area equipment.
 

-Leadership and coaching skills.
 

-Awareness of corporate financial systems.
 

-Enterprise One.
 

-Commercial awareness training/negotiating skills.
 

-Practical experience in operation, repair and fault finding in electronic control systems is essential and an ability to supervise and demonstrate repair and fault finding techniques to production and engineering staff.
 

-Full UK Drivers Licence.
 

-Good working knowledge of the practical application of tendering procedures.
 

-Work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

-Demonstrate financial awareness and control techniques including contract writing and review.
 

-Must demonstrate a pragmatic, insightful approach to problem solving and continually challenge traditional methods.
 

-Know, understand and be able to access and use CAD, Asset Management System, Word, Excel, MS Project and other appropriate software packages.

Desirable

-Knowledge of packaging machinery operation and process pipework systems would be advantageous, to complement the control system design and programming work.

-Experience of working in the drinks or a related industry.

-Experience of programming Siemens and Rockwell PLC systems

-Senior Control Engineer - control engineering requirements are defined by Production and Engineering management driven by capital expenditure plan. Resources and project scheduling are self managed using Microsoft Project package.
 

-Work is also proactively sought where Control and Computing can be enhanced to increase reliability or production

  • Knowledge and experience of control and electrical projects to command respect of other control engineers.
     
  • The Control Engineer requires a wide experience of control, electrical, electronic, programming and mechanical engineering and is capable of carrying out many engineering duties without further training.
     
  • Self motivation is extremely important to stay abreast of state of the art equipment, techniques and standards.
