Job Details

We are looking for a Packaging Technologist to project lead the development of a “fit for purpose” Packaging Specification database.  Working with stakeholders across the business to ensure the specifications meet the current demands, from the perspective of customer codes of practice, legislation, food safety + testing  and CSR.  Once developed ensure the ongoing maintenance of the database to ensure all “live” items purchased at all the sites are included. 

Working with the Purchasing, Technical, Manufacturing and NPD functions provide the Subject Matter Expertise on packaging for Greencore.  In conjunction with the stakeholders, develop robust ways of working and clearly defined accountabilities, for all aspects of packaging, from concept to delivery on site and usage in the factories, through to end consumer usage on its journey through the supply chain.

You will be a key member of the quarterly Packaging forum group, providing market knowledge and insight on a number of areas from product innovation, to sustainability issues, concerns and/or solutions, both for Greencores policy and those of its varied customers.

Main responsibilities


  • As the subject matter expert on all technology and functional related aspects of packaging, work cross functionally at a local and group level developing working relationships with key teams
    Working with the NPD teams in the business units on new packaging developments, providing expertise on all legal and food safety risks associated with the new packaging, ensuring it is fit for purpose prior to launch
    Supporting NPD and manufacturing/engineering in factory production trials and transit trials for new packaging items
    Support Technical for all technical packaging activities and issues
    Increase packaging knowledge and skills with individuals interacting with packaging throughout the business teams
    Ensure all built up acquired knowledge and “know how” is documented appropriately and available for wider use through the development of a core competence centre as a reference model for the group as a whole
    Ensuring all packaging sourced for the group adheres to the group policies and standards as well as customer codes of practice
    Working with suppliers to maintain robust specifications
    Approval of all packaging specifications
    Working with Technical and Testing Third Parties to develop and maintain an appropriate testing regime for all current packaging items and new products to minimise risk and ensure legal/regulatory compliance on food safety
    Be familiar with Customer codes of practice on packaging, including sustainability targets and ensure these feed into ongoing packaging developments
    Ensure up to date market knowledge on new technologies and innovations through supplier networks and attendance at relevant trade exhibitions
    Working with purchasing teams in new supplier selection providing expert knowledge on supplier technical capabilities
    Working with purchasing to generate and implement Procurement Excellence improvement initiatives
    Work with technical teams and manufacturing on non-conformances through to resolution and creation of any quality improvement plans
    Build external collaborations and maintain relationships with key scientific and industrial bodies

Ideal candidate

Degree in appropriate technical, scientific or engineering subject

Post graduate packaging technology qualification would be desirable

Member of the Institute Of Packaging preferable
