Job Details

This is a Sunday to Friday role working for a growing and bustling sandwich manufacturer.

Job Purpose: 

  • The role of the Production Manager is to assist the General Manager in the smooth running of the late production shift (which starts at 2.30 pm except Sundays when it starts at 12 pm), including evaluation of current processes to identify opportunities for improved efficiencies and performance, development of solutions and improvements.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:  

  • Pro-actively manage the late production shift to ensure that a safe working environment exists for all employees in the operation and that as a minimum the operation meets the standards set out in the Group Health & Safety policy.
  • Maintain standards of quality, food safety, hygiene and housekeeping within your area through Good Manufacturing Practice (G.M.P.) to ensure that both Business and customer standards are kept and audit requirements are fully met.
  • Appropriately manage the performance of all teams members through the use of performance management systems (i.e. appraisal) and, if necessary, to impose disciplinary sanctions in accordance with Company policy.
  • Own the training & development of all levels of team. Actively coach, develop, recruit and train team members to the required level of competence to encourage continuous improvement within the business.
  • Manage the NPD process within their area of responsibility to ensure that all trials run successfully and through to product launch.
  • Ensure the delivery of agreed KPIs across the operation through the team, making sure that KPIs are understood and utilised to support performance improvement plans and day to day activities. Ensuring systems are in place to collect the necessary data to measure performance against the agreed KPIs.
  • Plan, organise and measure labour and material requirements within their area to ensure that both short- and long- term agreed targets are met.
  • Ensure that the workforce in their area is well informed on relevant business news and to encourage effective cross-functional links and that channels of communication are clear and available.
  • Involvement in the selection process for direct reports and responsible for their supervision and coaching.Also involved in the recruitment process for staff at all levels below.
  • Encourage the Company values and a positive culture, whilst fostering good employee relations through fair, consistent and effective people management.
  • Responsibility for Food safety, Legality and Quality.

The Person

  • Educated to a degree level or equivalent (such as food science or technology) and possess 3-5 years of product management experience from within a food industry business.
  • Assertive but very approachable and be a good motivational leader with the ability to work closely with various teams to ensure the smooth running of projects.
  • Basic marketing skills (consumer trends, gap analysis and comp shop) to ensure product launches meet the expectations of the business and customer.
  • Experience as an NPD or R&D Manager with excellent process development skills who has proven success within the food and beverage industry – preferably FMCG Chilled.
  • Passionate about food, well-being, & packaging.
  • Experience of scale-up and launch of multi component products (ideally sandwiches or food to go) within a manufacturing environment as well as knowledge of product development, process and commercialisation.
  • Project management, relationship building and communication skills, along with the ability to work as part of a cross-functional team to deliver the project on time.
  • Previous experience working in a fast-paced environment, having good food knowledge and passion as well as being numerate and analytical.

This would suit someone already experienced with sandwiches or similar that would like to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond, with a varied and interesting job.

Indicative Salary Range: £35000 - 45000
