Head of HSE
The Role
- Champion HSE management on site and actively promote a developing safety culture within the site.
- Ensure that HSE key performance indicators are fully integrated into, and properly reflected, in overall site performance reporting.
- Ensure that HSE management systems remain current to ensure legal compliance.
- Act as the site’s expert resource on all HSE and employer liability claims issues
- Champion the need for improvements year on year in driving down accidents, management of near misses and in improving the sites employers’ liability claims performance
- Champion the need for improvements year on year in driving down key Environmental Indicators and leading the management of customer environmental initiatives.
- Support the delivery of the Bernard Matthews audit programme, working on a cross category basis as an auditor on other Business Unit sites.
- Key site contact with HSE and other enforcing bodies and emergency services
Responsibilities
- Provide advice and support to the site in the planning, measuring, reviewing and auditing on HSE activities to meet legal requirements, and Company Policies and procedures
- Keep up to date with new legislation, Company and other safety information, to be able to fulfill the duties of the role
- Contribute to continuous improvement projects, whist ensuring HSE requirements are still met
- Managing the HSE function including support for staff to ensure delivery of objectives
- Securing effective implementation of company, exec and local health and safety policies, standards and procedures
- Providing strategies to plan and organize work systems to reduce HSE risks and recommending suitable adaptations to plant, machinery and processes
- Planning and setting realistic objectives, decide priorities and drive their achievement within area of control
- Maintaining Employer’s Liability & other records to ensure confidentiality and compliance with GDPR
- Contributing to developing programmes to improve working practices through the provision of information, training and education
- Providing management information and statistics related to area of responsibility
- Promoting a positive HSE culture
- Implementing and monitoring accident and incident investigation, reporting and analysis
- Reviewing and auditing arrangements for HSE management and continuously improving these arrangements where appropriate
- Ensure robust reporting regimes are in place for HSE statistics and KPI’s to both the site management, exec board and company management
- Contributes to reviews of how operational performance can be improved on and how a company wide improvement culture can be established
- Participates in team wide culture of generating and implementing continuous improvement methods
- To undertake such additional duties as may be reasonably required commensurate with the level of responsibility within the site.
You
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 2 + years Health and Safety experience in a manufacturing environment (food industry would be desirable).
- Chartered Membership of IOSH, or working towards
- IEMA or similar environmental qualification.
- Significant relevant operational experience – preferably within the food industry
- Leadership skills
- Good understanding of the requirements of the H&S Management System: ISO 45001 and have experience of incorporating H&S Management Systems within businesses.
- Experience of being externally audited by Regulators and other interested parties.
- Experience of carrying out H&S Audits, Risk Assessments and Method Statements.
- Accident investigation and RIDDOR reporting experience.
- Demonstrate understanding of relevant H&S legislation
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Confident, assertive and diplomatic and able to influence senior management.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Competent PC and IT skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Problem solving and analytical abilities and able to work under own initiative
- Excellent time management skills, prioritise workload and perform well under pressure
