Factory Manager - Norfolk - 60k
The Factory Manager responsibility is for recruiting and developing a competent, capable and motivated team, recognised throughout the organisation for its expertise and value to the business. Leading Production teams in delivering the plant production plan to agreed product specifications, cost performance targets and in compliance with health and safety, environmental and food safety requirements. Accountable for continuous improvement of people, systems and plant in support of improving business performance.
With 3 direct reports (Production Managers in EV, Cutting and Packing). Responsible for approx. 370 people in a very busy environment, liaising with Engineering, QA, and Despatch to deliver high volumes of quality.
With an experienced Interim Factory Manager in place who would coach/mentor a new incumbent. This is a great opportunity for someone ambitious who has meat or poultry production management experience and can see themselves being a Site Director of the future. Numerically needs to be extremely astute the Site Director is extremely keen that the Factory Manager understands the impact of efficiencies, waste, yield etc.
Absolutely crucial is for the Factory Manager to be a leader – willing to lead from the front but bringing people with them. We have many people who know the numbers but lack the charisma to go one step further and make things tick.
Key Responsibilities
Health and Safety and Environment
- Lead the team to ensure all plant personnel comply with required statutory and mandatory H&S and Environmental requirements.
- Promote a ‘safety first’ culture and proactively drive H&S performance improvement to reduce accidents.
- Ensure all machinery and equipment is compliant with statutory requirements and is only operated by trained and competent personnel.
- Ensure H&S refresher training is conducted at appropriate intervals and personnel records are maintained.
Food Safety and Quality
- Lead the team to ensure all plant personnel are trained and competent in food safety, SOPs and QAS specifications and comply with all rules and procedures concerning the production of safe food produced to specification.
- Ensure SOPs are up to date, relevant and refresher training is conducted at appropriate intervals and personnel records are maintained.
- Responsible for regularly updating self and team on regulatory requirements (e.g. H&S, BRC, ETI) and then ensuring all requirements are complied with.
Performance
- Manage the effective delivery and enhancement of key operational effectiveness measures within production including product waste reduction, right first time quality processing, labour utilisation, productivity and overall efficiency.
- Carry out daily management reviews and ensure effective actions are taken to address issues affecting performance and introduce actions to prevent reoccurrence of issues.
- Report daily, and weekly and monthly performance to the business.
- Control labour and material usage costs.
- Manage and control plant overheads expenditure to deliver agreed budget performance.
Plant Standards and Development
- Identify, implement and maintain ‘GMP’, 5S and visual systems in support of efficient plant operation.
- Develop improvement plans for improving plant standards and performance.
- Support in maintaining annual and rolling three year capex proposal planning for maintaining plant fabric and infrastructure, essential replacement of equipment and investment payback opportunities.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify and prioritise improvement projects and activities, based on best ROI for efficiency and effectiveness, engaging the team in driving continuous improvement in performance.
- Lead and deliver the Department SPI program by deploying SPI tools and techniques in conjunction with team engagement to hold the gains.
- Lead the delivery of Standard Operating Procedures for tasks and roles across the site
People and Team Development
- Develop leadership and management skills for direct reports.
- Ensure Plant teams have the requisite skills to perform job roles correctly and have adequately trained deputies to develop into future leaders.
- Develop and deliver succession plans to ensure talent pipeline is in place.
Performance Management
- Promote a positive culture, demonstrating respect, professionalism and a `can do` attitude at all times.
- Celebrate success and highlight good practice
- Address colleague performance issues through effective use of performance management and other relevant procedures.
Holidays and absence management
- Coach Management team in maintaining control of holidays and minimising sickness/other absence in order to deliver the plan.
Essential Experience
- Experience of building and leading a team that strives for continual improvement in efficiency and effectiveness.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to operate effectively both internally and externally at multiple levels of an organisation.
- Exhibits positive behaviours and professionalism at all times, even in difficult situations or when executing unpopular or tough decisions.
- Able to hold others accountable whilst maintaining positive relationships.
- Proven ability to plan resources, time, budgets and responsibilities according to results requirement whilst taking the bigger picture into consideration.
- Able to align the business agenda with team/individual activities through effective delegation.
- Good IT skills – utilising Microsoft Office packages effectively, particularly Excel.
- Takes a proactive approach to balancing business and customer needs.
- Uses analytical skills and data to drive improvement priorities. Understanding of BRC, ETI requirements.
Desirable Experience
- Management / Leadership training.
- Prior Poultry/Meat industry experience at Management level.
- Manufacturing or Engineering degree.
- Lean Green Belt level training or hands on experience of delivering step change and continuous improvement projects
